Restroom Trailer Site Requirements: Power, Water, Leveling and Access
Restroom trailers add comfort to any event or work site, but they aren’t fully standalone. They need a reliable power supply, a water source, a level spot to sit on, and clear access for delivery and service trucks.
Providing all of that may sound simple, but at outdoor venues and on construction sites, it can be a challenge. Missing just one requirement can leave your trailer unusable.
This guide is for venue managers, event planners, and site managers. We cover everything you need to have in place before your restroom trailer arrives.
Restroom Trailer Power Requirements
Restroom trailers are more sophisticated than standard porta potties, so they need electricity. VIP To Go trailers require one or two independent, dedicated 20-amp circuits and run on one or two standard 110-volt outlets.
That means you don’t need special wiring or heavy-duty hookups. Standard outlets will do.
Just make sure those circuits are truly dedicated. Our trailers can draw the full 20 amps the breaker allows, so don’t plug anything else into the same circuit. If you want to add a coffee station or string lights, connect them to a separate circuit. Otherwise, you risk tripping the breaker and losing power to the trailer until you reset it.
Why does a restroom need so much power? Most of the draw comes from the heating and air conditioning, along with the water pump and lighting. These features keep the trailer comfortable in hot or cold weather, but they can draw a lot of power during peak use.
For this reason, we recommend placing the trailer close to its dedicated outlets. Long extension cord runs can lose voltage along the way and keep the trailer from running properly.
Our team can help you choose a location and advise on the right cords and where to connect them.
When Does a Restroom Trailer Generator Make Sense?
Some venues and sites have no power supply. In those cases, you’ll need a generator.
VIP To Go can provide a gas-powered generator to run the trailer’s lights and pumps. Generators are planned as part of your delivery, so request one when you book.
The same rule applies to generators: keep the trailer on its own circuit, separate from any speakers, lights, or fans you’re running.
Plan the generator’s location carefully. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, so place it in open air, away from guests, staff, tents, doorways, and anywhere exhaust could collect. Our team can help you find a safe spot.
Should You Use a Water Hookup or an Onboard Tank?
There are two ways to supply water to your restroom trailer:
- A hose hookup
- An onboard fresh water tank
We suggest a hookup when water is available on site. Trailers connect with a standard garden hose and need at least 40 psi and a flow rate of 5 gallons per minute. Most outdoor spigots meet these specs, but check yours, especially if it shares a line with irrigation. Hookup is simple: we connect a hose from the spigot to the trailer and turn on the water.
Onboard tanks are best when no hookup is available, such as at remote venues, fields, and beaches. We fill the tank and can advise on refills based on your event length and guest count. The more people you expect, the more often you’ll need to refill the tank.
Waste Tank Capacity and Pump-Outs for Multi-Day Rentals
Check waste tank capacity before booking a multi-day rental. Tank sizes vary by trailer model (see the table below).
Most single-day events don’t need a pump-out during the rental. For a one-day wedding or corporate event, we deliver the trailer, then pump it out and remove it afterward.
Multi-day rentals are different. Depending on usage, you may need to pump the waste tank and refill the fresh water tank during the event, and long events or heavy use may require daily servicing.
We’ll build a servicing schedule around how many days your event runs and how many guests you expect. Not sure which size you need? Our restroom trailer rental guide can help, and our post on preparing for your portable bathroom rental delivery covers what to do before the truck arrives.
Plan for paper products, too. Every trailer arrives stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, and soap, but you may need extra supplies if more guests arrive than expected or the rental runs longer than planned.

Note: All of our trailers require one or two dedicated 20-amp circuits and use a standard garden hose connection. Our Vegas and Stylish models come in many of the same sizes; ask our team for their tank specs. ADA restroom trailers have their own specifications, so review those before booking.
Delivery Truck Access and Leveling
Restroom trailers need flat, stable, dry ground. A level trailer lets the doors open and close properly and keeps the plumbing working as intended. Avoid marshy, wet, or muddy ground, and watch for low spots where water can pool.
Delivery trucks also need to reach the trailer for placement and servicing. Our fleet ranges from compact bumper-pull trailers to large semi-trailer units, so space requirements vary. We suggest walking the route with our team, in person or by video call.
We’ll check for tight corners and narrow gates to make sure trucks can reach the drop-off point. Watch for posts, parked cars, and low overhead wires that could snag equipment, and make sure the truck has room to turn around after delivery.
Finally, think about guest access. Ideally, set the trailer apart from the main activity but close enough to be convenient, with a clear, accessible route to the door. Our team can advise on placement, and our drivers handle delivery, setup, and pickup.
Site Checklist Before Delivery Day
Run through this checklist before delivery day so your restroom trailer installation goes off without a hitch:
- Confirm one or two dedicated 20-amp circuits are available, or book a generator
- Check that your spigot supplies at least 40 psi at 5 gallons per minute, or request onboard water
- Make sure the truck has a clear route to the drop-off point and room to turn around
- Choose a level, dry spot for the trailer
- Order enough stations for the number of guests you expect
- For multi-day events, schedule pump-outs and plan extra paper supplies
We offer a free site walkthrough to confirm placement, so you don’t have to work through this checklist alone. Contact our team, call (877) 564-6977, or visit our rental info page to learn more.
